New arena a possibility for Manchester

The English city of Manchester could be set for a major new arena near the Etihad Stadium, it has emerged.

The Manchester Evening News reports that a council report has detailed plans for an indoor arena that could seat more than 20,000 people, with “international investors” said to be considering the project.

The arena would rival the existing Manchester Arena, which has a capacity of 21,000.

The MEN added that the report will be put to an executive council meeting this week. It is believed that the growing profile of Manchester City has increased the opportunity for development in the area surrounding the club’s Etihad Stadium.

According to the MEN, the report says: “International investors and operators see Manchester as one of the few cities in Europe with the ability to successfully host more than one large arena.

“It is known that these investors are evaluating locational options and are addressing the detailed business case for such an investment with a view to selecting a site and bringing forward detailed development proposals later this year.”

The report adds that the Etihad Stadium site would need to be considered alongside other sites before any decision is made.
