Major development mooted for Nationals Park

Nationals Park, home of Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise the Washington Nationals, is reportedly set for a major new development.

The Washington Business Journal has reported that Events D.C., Washington D.C.’s sports and conventions authority, has approved the construction of a 35,000-square-foot restaurant and entertainment venue at Nationals Park.

Neither the Nationals or Events D.C. has commented on the matter, but the year-round venue will reportedly offer a restaurant, bar, lounge area, a screen wall, and a rooftop terrace. It is projected to bring in an additional $22.75m (£17.4m/€20.3m) in revenue per year.

The NBC Sports Washington website notes that with D.C. Council voting to legalise sports betting in February, a sportsbook could be included in the development. Nationals Park is one of three venues which can apply for a gambling license in the District of Columbia.

The reports concerning Nationals Park come after Ted Leonsis, owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, in March revealed plans to house a new sportsbook at Capital One Arena in what would mark the first space of its kind in the US.

Monumental owns Capital One Arena, as well as the Washington Capitals NHL franchise and the Washington Wizards NBA team, which both play at the facility.
