New app gives fans the lowdown on North Queensland Stadium

A new app has been launched to allow fans to experience the under-construction North Queensland Stadium before it opens in 2020.

The 25,000-seat stadium will serve as the home of NRL rugby league team the North Queensland Cowboys.

The stadium has reached a construction milestone with 50 per cent of its main build works having been completed, and the ‘nqstadium’ app has now been released to give the public a closer look at the venue. The app has been developed by principal consultant Cox Architecture and the Department of Housing and Public Works.

Hotspots on stadium images can be clicked on to reveal artists’ impressions, 360-degree pictures and before-and-after sliders that compare the existing 1300Smiles Stadium to the new facility. Voiceovers and on-screen text provide descriptions throughout the app.

Mick de Brenni, North Queensland’s Minister for Housing and Public Works, said: “In designing the stadium, the project team have used Building Information Modelling (BIM) to visualise spaces within the stadium to ensure the right balance between elegant architectural design and practical functionality is achieved.”

He added: “We’re really excited to share this leading digital technology with the public as we celebrate reaching the halfway mark in the main build, with 566,649 construction hours completed as of May 1, 2019, 97 per cent of which have been completed by local tradies.

“Of the 56 trade packages awarded so far, 44 have been awarded to local businesses investing Aus$137.7m (£74.8m/€85.3m/$95.3m) into local industry – this is a tremendous boost to the Townsville economy which, as we know, is getting back on its feet after the monsoon flooding earlier this year. That is 478 Townsville businesses that are already benefiting from being involved in this project.”

The app is available for free download from the Google Play and Apple App Store.

A more enhanced and sophisticated app, covering more aspects of North Queensland’s stadia, will launch in the future. The app will seek to further improve the user’s experience, offering seat bookings, game-day information, food and drink options and purchasing of merchandise.
