Austin FC to break ground on stadium next month

Major League Soccer expansion franchise Austin FC has signalled its intention to break ground on its new stadium on September 5, with a planned completion date set for spring 2021.

The multi-purpose stadium is set to have a capacity of 20,500. Last month, investment and management company Two Oak Ventures replaced Precourt Sports Ventures as the club’s owner and assumed responsibility for overseeing the development of the stadium.

Austin Commercial will serve as the construction manager for the stadium, work on which will now begin on September 5. Architecture firm Gensler is also working on the project.

Austin FC has also announced an expansion of its ownership group, with Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey joined by fellow Austinites Eddie Margain, Marius Haas and Bryan Sheffield.

Austin FC will become the 27th franchise in MLS when it enters the league in 2021, and in doing so it will become the first major league sports team in Austin.

MLS commissioner Don Garber is set to attend the groundbreaking ceremony and will joined by Austin FC chief executive Anthony Precourt.

Last week, MLS confirmed St. Louis as its 28th franchise city, with the team set to debut in a new stadium in 2022.
