Herediano to double capacity at new stadium

Leading Costa Rican Liga FPD football team Club Sport Herediano has revealed plans to build a new stadium that will offer double the capacity of its current home.

The Heredia-based club has played at the 8,000-capacity Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero since 1951, but has presented plans for a 16,000-capacity stadium it hopes will open in 2021.

Herediano officials believe their plans will make the new stadium one of the finest in Central America. It has been designed with multi-purpose use in mind and will also include a restaurant, amphitheatre, gym, shops and a museum.

The project is set to be carried out by Guatemalan construction company Aceros Prefabricados (APSA). Subject to final approval, work is scheduled to commence in January.

Herediano president Aquil Ali said the club could have opted to simply redevelop their existing home, but have instead decided to build a new stadium. “It will be something spectacular, not only for Herediano but for the whole country,” he added, according to Costa Rican newspaper La Teja.
