Altice extends commitment to Lisbon arena

The Portuguese division of French Netherlands telecommunications company Altice has agreed a 10-year extension to its deal with Arena Atlântico for naming rights to the country’s largest arena.

The Lisbon venue, formerly Pavilhão Atlântico, will continue to be known as Altice Arena under the deal with the facility’s operator. The announcement was made during Altice Arena’s staging of the 2019 Web Summit, with the telco stating that it will seek to roll out a 5G network at the venue.

“From now on, Altice Arena is being serviced by a 5G macro cell during the Web Summit, but which will then allow all those who already have 5G mobile phones to enjoy this technology,” said Altice Portugal CEO Alexandre Fonseca, according to Portuguese newspaper ECO.

The Altice Arena was developed ahead of Lisbon’s staging of Expo ’98. The Portuguese capital was previously lacking a multi-purpose arena to attract major entertainment shows, conferences and sports events.
