AFL Architects has released the final renders for a major new CNY2bn (£222m/€259m/$285m) training complex in China.
The 22-hectare project is the practice’s fourth sports commission in the country. The winning design was selected by client Dalian Wanda Group following an international competition.
When it is complete, the under-construction development will be one of the world’s top training facilities, able to meet the needs of 18 teams with a total of 600 coaches and athletes. The masterplan combines 23 training pitches with a 5,000-seat competition stand and separate community facilities.
“Dalian is a renowned footballing town in China, so designing the winning concept for this major development is a significant achievement for the team,” AFL Architects director Phil Osborne said. “We are proud to have been given this opportunity to envision new training grounds for both international and home-grown talent.”
The training complex buildings are world-class, with two full-size indoor pitches, teaching, rehabilitation, conference and other supporting facilities for the first team, reserves and academy teams. In addition to meeting the needs of professional football clubs, it will also serve as a training and competition venue for primary and middle-school students.
The five buildings complement each other with curving, undulating facades, clad in ribbons of stone, glazing and bronze panels, to create a dynamic, streamlined appearance.
The ribbons express the accommodation zones of the buildings, with training areas at pitch level, and with bedrooms and private areas above.
Major spaces within buildings face the pitches so that players feel motivated and engaged with their training environment, while green roofs and below-ground water storage boost the green credentials of the development.
