Verizon kits out Buffalo venues with 5G tech

US telecommunications company Verizon has said Buffalo’s New Era Field and KeyBank Center have become the latest sports venues to receive its 5G Ultra Wideband service.

New Era Field, home to NFL American football franchise the Buffalo Bills, and KeyBank Center, which houses NHL ice hockey team the Buffalo Sabres, become the 16th NFL stadium and fifth indoor arena, respectively, equipped with the technology.

Verizon is building what it claims is the most powerful 5G network in America and by bringing the technology to stadia and arenas it hopes to provide fans with access to higher capacity, faster download speeds and lower latency.

The company commenced this drive in September by announcing that 13 NFL stadia had been fitted with its new 5G wireless service ahead of the new season. New Era Field and KeyBank Center will become the first places in Buffalo to offer the service.

Verizon said in a statement: “These Verizon 5G installations are part of the company’s strategy to bring this next generation network technology to major venues and public spaces where large groups of people gather. Teams, vendors and other businesses working to support events may also be able to use 5G mobility services to provide a differentiated experience for spectators and participants alike.”
