Romanian city set for new football stadium

The Romanian city of Iași is set to receive a new stadium capable of hosting major events for European football’s governing body UEFA after a design contract was awarded for the project.

The stadium will be the new home of top-tier Liga 1 club Politehnica Iași and will have a capacity of between 15,000 and 20,000.

Sigm – Home Projects has been awarded the design contract following a tender process operated by the municipality of Iași that attracted submissions from five companies. The DigiSport.ro website said the new stadium will be designed to accommodate competitions staged by UEFA, along with Romanian national team matches.

However, its location is yet to be determined with two sites being assessed. One of these is the land on which Stadionul Emil Alexandrescu, Politehnica Iași’s current home, is located.

The News.ro website added that Iași is also set to receive a 10,000-capacity arena, with Mayor Mihai Chirica awarding the design contract for this project to Sigm – Home Projects at the end of last year.
