LaLiga, LFP celebrate record attendances

Spain’s LaLiga and the French Football League (LFP) have released figures detailing increased attendances during the first half of the 2019-20 season.

Attendances across the top two divisions of Spanish football increased by 1.53 per cent, with a registered total attendance of 7,605,952 in the first half of this season. Attendances in the top flight stood at 5,398,206, an increase of five per cent on the same stage during 2018-19.

Stadium occupancy in the second tier of Spanish football during the first half of this season stood at 51.6 per cent, a record high in comparison with previous seasons. LaLiga noted that this is particularly significant given that stadium capacities are higher this season than last season. The total number of spectators in the Segunda División has now surpassed the 2.2 million mark.

The stadium occupancy rate in the top-tier LaLiga has risen to 74.3 per cent this season, with the average crowds currently standing at 28,412. Overall stadium occupancy across the top two divisions rose from 61.4 per cent last season to 65.9 per cent this.

LaLiga has set its sights on breaking the 15 million attendance figure across the top two leagues this season. This would represent a significant increase from the figure of 13.1 million in 2013-14 and attendances have been slowly rising since then.

Attendances in France’s Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 have been equally as impressive during the first half of the 2019-20 season, with a record-breaking 5.57 million fans attending matches.

The two leagues have seen cumulative attendances increase by 500,000 over the past five years. The top-tier Ligue 1 has experienced a 0.62 per cent increase in attendances, from 4.22 million in 2018-19 to 4.24 million in 2019-20.

Stadium occupancy in Ligue 1 rose to 72.5 per cent. Paris Saint-Germain, RC Strasbourg and Amiens SC contributed largely to this with their home grounds boasting an average occupancy rate of more than 90 per cent.

Total attendance in the second-tier Ligue 2 during the first half of the season stood at 1.32 million, an increase of 5.93 per cent on last season. Attendances in Ligue 2 have been boosted by RC Lens, which sits at the top of the table and plays at the 38,000-seat Stade Bollaert-Delelis.
