Mobilitie to bring 5G tech to Staples Center

Sports and entertainment company AEG has expanded its partnership with wireless infrastructure provider Mobilitie to enable 5G connectivity at Los Angeles’ Staples Center arena.

The new agreement, which was brokered by AEG Global Partnerships, also covers the nearby L.A. Live sports and entertainment district. The deal builds on AEG’s partnership with Mobilitie, which has served as the exclusive wireless communication services and distributed antenna system provider of Dignity Health Sports Park, home of Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy, since 2017.

Mobilitie will help bring enhanced connectivity to the 20,000-seat Staples Center and L.A. Live through state-of-the-art wireless infrastructure that will meet future wireless demands and enable 5G. The technology will allow for expanded digital initiatives, improved venue operations and enhanced fan experiences.

The upgrade will take place as part of a phased approach, initially covering Staples Center before expanding across L.A. Live. It is hoped the rollout will allow fans to connect to larger amounts of data in real time.

The 5G tech will deliver speeds up to 10 times faster and lower latency than 4G, opening up the possibility for new forms of entertainment and dynamic experiences inside and outside Staples Center.

Staples Center serves as the home of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings and the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. The arena also hosts major music events and together with L.A. Live the two venues attract more than 20 million guests annually.

The new partnership will enhance the venues’ day-to-day operations in areas such as safety and security, parking, indoor wayfinding, touchless electronic ticketing, mobile point of sales, Internet of Things technology, private networks and building maintenance.

Lee Zeidman, president of Staples Center and L.A. Live, said: “This next step in our relationship with Mobilitie, a global leader when it comes to wireless solutions, is a significant investment in the advancement of Staples Center and L.A. Live.

“Together we are paving the way for the arrival of 5G technology and upgrading our world-class facilities with a high-performing network that will revolutionise connectivity for our guests and allow us to help shape the future of sports and live entertainment as we know it.”

Christos Karmis, president and chief executive of Mobilitie, added: “We are proud to be strengthening our relationship with AEG, a forward-thinking leader known for its commitment to excellence and innovation.

“This next phase of our work together at Staples Center and L.A. Live will deliver unprecedented connectivity to fans, and will also allow us to showcase our next generation wireless technology in two of the world’s most iconic sports and entertainment venues. We look forward to being a part of this significant network transformation, which will positively impact millions of customers around the globe.”
