Winvic lands contract for next stage of Edgbaston transformation

Warwickshire County Cricket Club has announced that work has begun on the second phase of the transformation of its Edgbaston stadium.

Works have commenced to transform land at the Birmingham venue to create a new entrance plaza, car parking facilities and ‘The Edgbaston Residences’ complex, which will comprise 375 high quality residential apartments and new retail and leisure opportunities.

Winvic Construction has been appointed as the main contractor to begin the £93m (€104.4m/$127m) project by Warwickshire and PATRIZIA AG, which purchased the residential site next to the Pershore Road from the club and Homes England.

Plans for the second phase were initially revealed in August 2017, with a price tag at the time of £85m. All works are expected to be completed in the second half of 2023 with the plaza, landscaping and car parking works finished by spring 2022, when Edgbaston hosts the women’s T20 tournament in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and a men’s Test match between England and South Africa.

Craig Flindall, chief operating officer at Warwickshire CCC, said: “Despite the barriers created by the COVID pandemic and national lockdowns, we have been able to navigate a way through and are delighted that we can now get this major redevelopment project underway, which will transform our stadium footprint and the surrounding facilities.

“It has taken great effort to keep things moving in the current climate, but today’s (Wednesday’s) start ensures that key elements of the project will be completed ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and everything will be completed by autumn 2023.

“Later this year we intend to reveal plans for the third phase of the Edgbaston Masterplan, which will include the next phase of the redevelopment of the stadium.”

The 375 apartments within the Edgbaston Residences are a build to rent (BTR) scheme and offer car parking and cycle storage. Approximately 20,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space is available on the ground floor.

Mark Jones, Winvic’s director of multi-room, said: “The Residences BTR project and redevelopment works for Warwickshire CCC are both exciting schemes in different ways, and winning these contracts illustrate Winvic’s breadth of experience across the various areas of construction.

“Winvic is as comfortable delivering 18-storeys of luxury apartments for PATRIZIA and highways works for Warwickshire CCC as it is creating over 76,000 sq ft of car parking and a large piazza which will be welcoming people to watch the Commonwealth Games in 18 months. We have already built a great relationship with these two new clients and we’re looking forward to exceeding their expectations.”

Phase One of the Edgbaston Masterplan saw the £32m redevelopment of the South and West Stands. Following the demolition of around one third of the stadium, this phase of the Masterplan was completed ahead of the England men’s 2011 Test match versus India.
