UBS Arena launches NFTs to mark grand opening

UBS Arena and New York Islanders have announced plans for NFTs to mark the opening of the new arena later this week.

The first limited edition NFT drop, in association with NFT supplier Orange Comet and Oak View Group, will debut on November 20 to coincide with the Islanders’ first ever NHL game to be played at the $1.1bn, 19,000-capacity multi-purpose venue. The collection will comprise of four designs including several special NFTs which will contain unique fan experiences and real-world items.

The first 1,000 fans who pre-register for the New York Islanders NFT drop will receive a limited-edition custom goalie mask NFT created exclusively for the drop by Orange Comet.

“As UBS Arena opens its doors to the top performers in the world, we’re thrilled to be working with Orange Comet to revolutionise how fans interact with their favourite team, artists and performers,” said Tom Pistore, president of commercial business operations for UBS Arena.

Orange Comet specialises in producing NFT and blockchain experiences for some of the most valuable intellectual property assets in the world of sports, music, art, and entertainment.

“Our goal from the beginning of this project was to create the first third-generation arena in the industry as well as one of the most tech focused,” said Dan Griffis, president of global partnerships for Oak View Group.

“In order to stand behind this statement, it was important for us to identify a variety of ways to enhance the overall customer experience and building NFTs that involve blockchain technology are clearly a key piece to this story as we look for ways to connect the digital and physical worlds.”

Prior to the opener, special edition UBS Arena NFTs will also be gifted to those in attendance at the UBS Arena Foundation Benefit Event on November 19, 2021.

On Friday, UBS Arena will celebrate its opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring speakers from UBS, UBS Arena, The New York Islanders, and other VIPs. After the ceremony, the venue and its hospitality partner Delaware North will host a food and beverage showcase for the media highlighting some of the offerings available throughout the arena.

UBS Arena’s grand opening takes place on Saturday, November 20 with the New York Islanders’ home opener against the Calgary Flames. Doors open at 5pm. Guests will enjoy a variety of fan activations on the concourses and terraces and an opening night ceremony before the puck drops at 7:30pm.

In celebration of the Islanders’ first home game at UBS Arena, the Empire State Building, Pier 17 at The Seaport and the Nassau County Dome will be illuminated in Islanders blue and orange on Saturday evening.
