Ternana stadium project to come complete with ‘unique’ clinic

Italian Serie B football club Ternana has officially presented the final version of a masterplan for the complete redevelopment of its Stadio Libero Liberati, which will also incorporate the construction of a state-of-the-art clinic.

Ternana has entered the plans with the Province of Terni, which having already looked favourably upon the project, is set to forward it on to the regional authorities in Umbria for their assessment.

Ternana has played at the Stadio Libero Liberati since the stadium opened in 1969. The new project, which comes with a total price tag of close to €62.2m (£52.4m/$71.1m), will see the Libero Liberati transformed into a stadium with a capacity of 18,037, with a new club museum also incorporated.

The new clinic will provide space for 203 beds, with Ternana president, Stefano Bandecchi, stating both facilities will be state-of-the-art. “We will build a beautiful stadium, which can also host (UEFA) Champions League or (FIFA) World Cup matches,” he said, according to the Corriere dell Umbria.

“It will be a stadium that can boast of having been born combined with a centre that develops intelligence and research, a clinic that will be characterised by three aspects. It will be available to Terni, collaborating with the Terni hospital and with the local health system, which is why we ask for affiliated beds; then it will also have beds for the ‘rich’, because things that are unique in the world will be done in the new clinic.

“Finally, there will be a medical-scientific research centre that is state-of-the-art, with equipment of international level. I promise that in Terni there will be conducted the most important research in the world.”

Regarding a timeline for the venture, project manager Sergio Anibaldi added: “If all goes well and in the right terms the signing of the agreement could take place in September 2022. Then we calculate three months for the executive project, before approval and three construction phases.

“Works commence in February 2023 with completion – and use of a new section of the stadium – in July 2023; then March 2024 the second stage and February 2025 the third.”

Completion in 2025 would coincide with centenary celebrations for Ternana.
