Spanish LaLiga football club RCD Espanyol has entered into a partnership with NFT marketplace Fayre, with the wide-ranging deal to include in-stadium activations for fans.
Fayre will create “unprecedented” NFTs that bridge metaverse and real-life experiences. The NFTs will grant supporters exclusive access to certain areas of RCDE Stadium.
Espanyol said the deal will support the club’s efforts to increase its NFT-related sponsorship turnover by 15% this season. A range of other fan-related benefits will be announced in due course.
Espanyol chief executive, José María Duran, said: “We are constantly working to open up new business models that help RCD Espanyol grow and we believe in the NFT model. Soon we will enter fully into the world of NFT collectibles with limited collections. There will be different designs of historical assets and the club’s mascot, in reference to the periquitos fans.”
Luis Carranza, executive director and founder of Fayre, added: “The association allows Fayre to show how the utility and access to NFTs can help increase community participation. It’s also a powerful tool for increasing revenue.”
Espanyol is currently 13th in LaLiga, with this season marking the club’s first back in the top flight following relegation in 2020.
RCDE Stadium has a capacity of 40,000. In February 2020, Espanyol claimed a first for Spain as it detailed plans to make the venue cashless through a link-up with financial services company CaixaBank.
