RheinEnergieStadion to host triple-header of ice hockey games

RheinEnergieStadion, home of German Bundesliga football club FC Köln, will host three ice hockey games featuring Kölner Haie as part of the Cologne Stadium Series.

It had previously been announced that Kölner Haie would take on Adler Mannheim at the stadium on December 3, when the Bundesliga season is paused due to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Kölner Haie has now announced that it will play two further games at RheinEnergieStadion against the Fischtown Pinguins on December 22 and the Augsburg Panthers on January 8. The stadium will be available for use on these dates as the Bundesliga has its mid-season winter break.

Kölner Haie, which competes in the top-tier Deutsche Eishockey Liga, usually plays its games at the Lanxess Arena but the venue is unavailable on the aforementioned dates. The three games at RheinEnergieStadion will coincide with the club’s 50th anniversary season.

Philipp Walter, managing director of Kölner Haie, said: “We are delighted to enrich a special anniversary season with the Cologne Stadium Series. Due to the poor availability of the Lanxess Arena, the design of the 2022-23 schedule has proven to be very difficult.

“We made a virtue out of necessity and so we can offer our fans two more outdoor games in addition to the DEL Winter Game. The football World Cup in the winter and the freedom that comes with it at RheinEnergieStadion gave us room to manoeuvre. Above all, we would like to thank Kölner Sportstätten, 1. FC Köln, Penny DEL and our DEL opponents on these days, with whom we are working closely to make the Cologne Stadium Series possible.”

Kölner Haie season ticket holders will automatically receive tickets for the RheinEnergieStadion games, with fans to be seated next to their usual neighbours from Lanxess Arena. Over 26,000 tickets have already been sold for the December 3 game against Adler Mannheim.
