Farul Constanța set for government-backed stadium

Liga I football club Farul Constanța is set to receive a new stadium backed by the Romanian Government and named in honour of arguably the country’s greatest player of all time, Gheorghe Hagi.

The Government, on the proposal of the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration, has given the green light to the project. Farul, currently top of the 2022-23 Liga I table, has played at the 4,500-seat Stadionul Viitorul since last year as their traditional home, Stadionul Farul, is in a state of disrepair.

The new stadium will have an 18,000-seat capacity, and will also include a 1,000-seat training ground for football and athletics. The stadium building will also incorporate training rooms, a conference centre; and exhibition, administrative, commercial and catering spaces.

It will be developed to tie in with UEFA category four requirements. It is projected to cost 480.49m lei (£85.6/€97.8m/$95.9m), of which the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration will contribute 474m lei with the remainder provided by the Municipality of Constanța. The design process and construction of the stadium is expected to take 28 months to complete.

Hagi began his storied playing career with Farul and is now both majority owner and manager of the club.
