Rugby New York has announced that it will be playing its home games at Mount Vernon Memorial Stadium for the 2023 season.

The team has agreed a multi-year partnership to play at the stadium, which was unveiled on September 21 after undergoing a $40m (£33m/€37m) renovation following its closure in 2010.

The new 3,900-capacity stadium is located a 25-minute train ride from Grand Central Station in Manhattan, with the team stating that the venue is ideally located in the “heart of the New York rugby community”. Rugby New York competes in Major League Rugby and won the league for the first time last season.

The turf field is designed to NFL standards, while the wider stadium complex features a skate park, tennis courts and an eight-lane track. Rugby posts will be added to the ground in due course, and the team is exploring field alterations to add lines to the pitch.

Mount Vernon Memorial Stadium will also feature a range of food and beverage options, theme nights, an LED video board and more.

Rugby New York hopes the stadium move will bring a new rugby audience to the Westchester area, with the team planning on supporting nearby communities and driving socio-economic benefits for businesses and local people.

The stadium has a history of hosting major music concerts, with Ella Fitzgerald, Run DMC, Joni Mitchell, James Brown and the Jackson 5 all having performed there.

Rugby New York has previously played at various venues across New York and spent the 2022 league-winning season at JFK Stadium in Hoboken, New Jersey. The team said it would continue to be involved with Hoboken and the New Jersey area.

Fans can place a $50 deposit for priority order to purchase season tickets for 2023. Full season memberships will begin at $150 per person.
