Spanish LaLiga football team Athletic Club has announced that it is backing Non-League Day, a UK-based campaign that promotes attendance at semi-professional and grassroots matches.

Bilbao-based Athletic becomes the first LaLiga club to support Non-League Day, which will take place in the UK on March 25.

The club will work with the Biscay Federation, the Basque Football Federation and its partner clubs to promote attendance at local stadiums on September 9-10. The Biscay province features 141 football teams across non-league divisions.

Athletic will promote attendance at these teams, as well as a further 19 clubs from the wider Basque region. The event will be framed within the context of Athletic’s own 125th anniversary celebrations.

The club will provide accessible information about teams’ fixtures and also propose plans to encourage turnout from locals. Each ground will seek to become a hub for community, sport and entertainment, Athletic said.

Athletic will also be promoting London-based non-league club Dulwich Hamlet on March 25. Athletic Club members in London on that day will be given the chance to attend Dulwich’s match against Oxford City for free.

The club will also offer travel packages for the weekend through its partnership with B The Travel Brand. Athletic said it has chosen to promote attendance at Dulwich as the two teams met at the beginning of the 20th century and share similar values.

Non-League Day was created in 2010. This year’s event will coincide with an international weekend to encourage fans of Premier League and Championship clubs to attend a local non-league game.
