The Municipal Council of the Portuguese town of Vila Nova de Famalicão is set to launch an international public tender for investors and private developers to submit proposals for a new stadium for its Primeira Liga football club.

FC Famalicão currently plays at the Estádio Municipal de Famalicão, which has a capacity of around 5,300. The stadium site also houses the club’s training complex and the town council is seeking potential partners to construct a new venue.

The council is also planning on building other commerce and service facilities, a multi-purpose park and an underground park. A feasibility study is being carried out to assess the economic scale of the project.

The tender process will launch in the second half of this year, and it is hoped that the council can begin work on the stadium project in 2025. The town council would grant land to a developer for a certain period of time during the construction phase, after which point the area would return to the council.

The project is set to be privately financed and will not include any investment from the town council. The stadium could be finished by 2027.

Town Mayor Mário Passos (pictured centre) said: “We are able to enhance the urban space and maintain the Estádio Municipal in the same location, providing it with conditions suited to a top national and international football team, all without associated municipal financial investment.”

FC Famalicão is currently eighth in the Primeira Liga. The club has played in the top tier since 2019-20 and finished eighth last season.
