PSV planning renovation of Philips Stadion’s north stand

Dutch Eredivisie football club PSV Eindhoven has announced plans to upgrade the upper ring of Philips Stadion’s north stand.

The project will see the outside of the stand closed off and will also include better catering facilities and more toilets. PSV hopes to begin the upgrades next season.

It comes after the club last month said it would push on with plans for a wider expansion of Philips Stadion after a study concluded that PSV’s current home is its optimum base in Eindhoven.

Discussing the club’s plans for the north stand, Philips Stadion director Sjors van den Boogaart said: “We have the most ground to gain on the upper ring road on the north side. The outside is still partially open, making it unprotected against precipitation. The new look is inspired by the Philips Stadium from the 1970s.”

He added: “Additional toilets and better catering facilities should ensure short queues. We are still in discussions with the municipality about the start date, but I expect that we can make a good start next season.”

Renderings of the proposed renovation have been released by construction company Royal BAM Group.

Philips Stadion is owned and operated by the club and the stadium has a capacity of around 35,000. The club feels the stadium is no longer large enough to meet its future ambitions.

In October, PSV appointed the Hypercube agency to assess its stadium options. Hypercube has concluded that Philips Stadion, located in the heart of Eindhoven, remains the best place for the club, and with the cooperation of external consultants, a cost calculation is being drawn up for a stadium expansion of around 10,000 seats.

Hypercube’s findings have also been supported by Eindhoven City Council.
