Liga Portugal, organising body of the top two divisions of domestic football, has reported record attendance figures for the 2023-24 season.

Liga Portugal and Liga Portugal 2 saw 4,263,585 spectators pass through stadium gates last season, a 10% increase on the previous campaign. This set a new benchmark, both for total attendance and individually for the two leagues, since the governing body began officially tracking figures back in 2012-13.

Breaking the figures down per league, the top-tier Liga Portugal, which was won by Sporting CP last season, registered 3,708,010 million spectators in the stands. Liga Portugal 2, which was won by Santa Clara, pulled in 555,575 fans.

Commenting on the figures, Liga Portugal said: “Absolutely historic numbers that embody Liga Portugal’s motto at the start of the season, ‘O Futebol És Tu!’, which aimed to promote the strong return of fans and families to the stadiums.”

The French Football League (LFP) last week reported that Ligue 1 posted a record average attendance during the 2023-24 season, with crowds also continuing to rise in Ligue 2.
