Genoa’s new sports arena, which is part of the Levante Waterfront regeneration plan, has been presented in the Fiera area.

The venue is located inside the city’s Palasport and is designed by RPBW Renzo Piano Building Workshop at a cost of €23m (£19m/$25m).

It is able to accommodate up to 5,000 people with 80 per cent of that being made up of seating distributed across eight circular stands.

“This Palasport is not just a place for sports, but a multifunctional hub that can adapt to the changing needs of our community,” said Genoese Mayor Marco Bucci.

“The versatility of the interior spaces allows us to host different sports disciplines, improving the accessibility and use of our facility.

“We wanted to guarantee a superior experience for spectators and athletes. From the quality of the seats to the advanced acoustic technology, every detail has been taken care of to create a welcoming and stimulating environment for all those who will cross the threshold of this renovated Palasport.

“Thanks to all those who have worked tirelessly to make this project a reality.”

The design company worked closely with the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) to ensure that it met the requirements for hosting key sports.

As a result, the arena will be able to host regional and national events in futsal, skating, and handball. Additionally, it will also be capable of staging international competitions in basketball, volleyball, tennis, martial arts, gymnastics, roller hockey, badminton, sports dance, and fencing.

The facility is divided into a basement and three main levels above ground, and has been built in line with CONI regulations.

It also features changing rooms, corporate areas, a first aid room for athletes, anti-doping areas, storage for wheelchairs, changing rooms for referees and officials, and an underground car park with 800 spaces.

The renovation is also due to see solar panels installed on the roof and a system that will use sea water to power machines that cool and heat the building when required.

“Multidisciplinarity, eco-sustainability, management balance, compliance with current regulations and new technical-sports needs, usability by citizens, some of the aspects that I would like to highlight about the sports arena, a characterising element of the Palasport and the Waterfront di Levante,” said CONI Liguria president Antonio Micillo.
