Fiorentina’s home ground, Stadio Artemio Franchi, is set to be reduced to almost half its capacity while renovation work is undertaken on the venue.

Florence’s Provincial Commission for the Supervision of Public Entertainment Venues has approved events to take place at the venue with a reduced capacity of 24,786. The stadium, home to the Serie A football team, is being redeveloped by the Municipality of Florence.

The figure was agreed upon by the City, its police and fire departments, the local health authority, and the Italian National Olympic Committee.

It is a reduction from the maximum capacity of 43,147 but the number has been increased from the 22,000 previously stated by former Florentine Mayor Dario Nardella.

“[The Municipality of Florence] has decided to prepare a project that provides for a stadium capacity of 24,786 seats, therefore greater than the 22,000 seats envisaged in the agreement with ACF Fiorentina,” read a statement from the authority body.

“There is maximum availability to collaborate on the next steps.

“The structural configuration of the sectors as proposed allows for flexibility in terms of space management and occupation of the sectors during events deemed relevant for public order and safety.”

A resolution is still required for where away fans will sit and how many seats will be available.

The work is set to see the stadium fitted with a new rood and new stands that will bring fans closer to the pitch.

Fiorentina was initially due to move to a temporary home while construction took place. However, the project may be extended until 2028 in a move that would enable the club to remain at the stadium for its duration.

The club has called on the Municipality of Florence to suspend work on the redevelopment as it does not want to mark its centenary in 2026 with construction still taking place.
