Organisers of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles have revealed host venues for 19 more sports, including badminton, golf and track cycling.

Venues have been confirmed in Los Angeles and the neighbouring cities of Carson and Long Beach. Friday’s announcement follows previously shared venue plan updates, which were announced in June.

Badminton will be played at the Galen Center, an indoor arena that serves as the home of the University of South California’s basketball and volleyball teams.

It has also been confirmed that the LA Convention Center, which served as the main press centre during the 1984 Games, will host fencing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo and wrestling. Earlier this month, the LA City Council voted to move forward with an expansion project for the venue ahead of the 2028 Games.

Across the street from the LA Convention Center, weightlifting events will take place at Peacock Theater. The golf tournaments will be played at The Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood of Los Angeles.

Meanwhile in Carson, the multi-use Dignity Health Sports Park (pictured), which serves as the home of Major League Soccer team LA Galaxy, will host a range of sports. Track cycling will take place at the complex’s velodrome, while hockey, rugby sevens and tennis will be held elsewhere on the site.

The Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center has been selected to host handball events, while canoe-sprint and rowing competitions will be held at the city’s Marine Stadium.

Elsewhere in Long Beach, sailing will be held along the Belmont Shore, while marathon swimming and triathlon competitions will be held along Alamitos Beach. Water polo will be held in a temporary aquatics centre at the Convention Center lot, in addition to artistic swimming as previously announced.

The latest announcement includes venue assignments that are unchanged from the original 2017 bid plan, along with new assignments.

Janet Evans, LA28’s chief athlete officer, said: “The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will reflect all that the Los Angeles area has to offer, and with these venue assignments, we’re very proud to bring the Games to many of our vibrant and diverse communities.

“The City of Los Angeles will host more Olympic sports than anywhere else, and Carson and Long Beach, which hosted competitions in previous Games, will host more competitions than ever before. The venues in these cities are world-class, and provide the ideal conditions for athletes and fans, and we look forward to welcoming them in 2028.”

Last month’s update saw swimming events awarded to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Gymnastics and basketball will be held at Crypto.com Arena and Intuit Dome, respectively, while canoe slalom and softball competitions will be held away from Los Angeles, in Oklahoma City.

In the months ahead, LA28 will announce additional venue assignments in Los Angeles and elsewhere, including new sports that were added since its original 2017 bid plan. Per current guidelines, LA28 will not use corporate or philanthropic names for stadiums and arenas during the Games.

The 2028 Olympics will take place from July 14-30, with the Paralympics to follow from August 15-28.

Reynold Hoover was recently appointed as the new chief executive of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games organising committee, replacing Kathy Carter who stepped down in December.
