The MotoGP motorcycle-racing series has cancelled a planned event in Kazakhstan for the second year running, citing operational and logistical issues arising from earlier flooding across the region.
The Grand Prix of Kazakhstan will be replaced by the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, which will take place from September 20-22.
The cancellation has been announced today (Monday), with MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports, the sport’s governing body the FIM, and the IRTA teams’ association deeming it “impossible” to hold the event in 2024.
The inaugural Grand Prix of Kazakhstan had been due to take place in July last year, but the event was cancelled following delays in development work at the Sokol International Racetrack near Almaty.
MotoGP struck a five-year hosting deal with Kazakhstan in September 2022, but the country will not stage a race until 2025 at the earliest following today’s announcement.
The Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix will take place at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The circuit will host back-to-back race weekends as it is already pencilled in to stage the San Marino Grand Prix from September 6-8.
The MotoGP season continues in early August with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. MotoGP has already been forced to postpone events in India and Argentina this year.
