Bristol Bears have announced plans to take the first Premiership rugby union game to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

Dubbed the ‘Big Day Out’, the 2024-25 season fixture will take place in Round 16 on May 10. The Bears’ opposition will be revealed when the Premiership fixtures are released on July 23.

The Bears play their home games at Ashton Gate, the 27,000-seat stadium it shares with Championship football club Bristol City. The club said: “By taking a home game to a 75,000-capacity international stadium, we will deliver a world-class event to help us reach new audiences and grow our commercial revenue.

“Moving the fixture to the Principality Stadium – and become the first Premiership club to host a game in Wales – aligns to Premiership Rugby’s ‘Big Game’ strategy and follows in the footsteps of Harlequins and Saracens, who have staged commercially successful events at alternative stadiums. This fixture is a key component to become financially sustainable.”

The game will be included in the 2024-25 Bears season ticket, with holders also able to claim a 10% discount to buy additional tickets for friends and family. Match tickets go on sale on July 23, with prices from £25 (€30/$33) for adults and £10 for Under-12s, while there’s also a 20% discount for groups of eight or more.

Harlequins and Saracens have staged an annual Premiership match each at Twickenham and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent seasons. Saracens struck a five-year deal to play an annual showpiece match at the home of Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur back in April 2019.
