Surrey County Cricket Club has joined forces with sustainable energy supplier, SSE Energy Solutions, for the upcoming year to aid the ambitious goal of it and the Kia Oval to reach net zero by 2030.
The partnership will look to engage directly with fans about sustainability initiatives, educating and inspiring people around shared net zero goals for the future.
SSE Energy Solutions is the shop-front for the SSE Group, which is making moves in the energy transition with £20.5bn (€24.4bn/$26.7bn) worth of private investment that is committed to clean energy infrastructure over the next three years.
SSE Energy Solutions will have a prominent presence throughout the Kia Oval venue in London with branding featured in-bowl and on digital displays. It will also work with the club on sustainable initiatives around the stadium.
The partnership will commence in earnest tomorrow (Thursday) with SSE Energy Solutions backing Surrey’s Sustainabili-T20 fixture against Hampshire.
Surrey and the Kia Oval’s net zero goal will require a reduction of 80% of the club and venue’s emissions.
Steve Elworthy, CEO at Surrey County Cricket Club, said: “It’s hugely important for us to work with partners who will support us to drive awareness and action towards a net zero future. Together, we can make a significant impact.”
Nikki Flanders, managing director of SSE Energy Solutions, added: “Our purpose is to support customers to achieve their net zero plans. Surrey County Cricket Club and the Kia Oval are leading the way in sustainability, and by tapping into the passion of sport, we can engage with even more people on sustainability, meaning a better world for us all.”
Surrey in January agreed a five-year extension to its stadium naming rights partnership with the UK arm of South Korean automotive manufacturer Kia in a record deal which also incorporated headline sponsorship of the club.
The agreement means the stadium will continue to be known as the Kia Oval through to the end of 2029.
