The Comunidad de Madrid has committed to a long-term redevelopment project for the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas designed to ensure it remains home to LaLiga football club, Rayo Vallecano.

The Vallecas, located in the district of Puente de Vallecas, has been home to Rayo since opening in 1976, but the current standard of its facilities had led the club to explore staging games elsewhere or even building a new stadium nearby.

However, the Comunidad has now detailed an improvements programme which aims to ensure Rayo can continue playing in the stadium for as long as the club desires. While this will initially focus on a €2m (£1.68m/$2.18m) investment from the regional executive for repairs deemed urgently needed, the Comunidad said this will be the precursor to “comprehensive reform” of the stadium.

Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Mariano de Paco Serrano, said: “The objective is for Rayo Vallecano to continue playing matches in better conditions.”

De Paco said the Comunidad, which owns the Vallecas, has coordinated on this effort with both Rayo president, Raúl Martín Presa, and LaLiga counterpart, Javier Tebas.

The first improvement works will commence in 2025 and extend until 2027, with the goal of ensuring they don’t interfere with the stadium’s staging of Rayo games during this time.

“It was unsustainable for Rayo to stay there if the stadium remained as it was,” De Paco added, according to 20minutos. “Our priority is to ensure that the facilities are at the level of a LaLiga stadium and that the club continues to be the emblem of the Vallecas district.”

In terms of future plans, Martín Presa has outlined the need for the stadium to be expanded from its current capacity of 14,708, along with the introduction of a car park to service it.
