The German Football League (DFL) has revealed that a record 20.7 million tickets were sold by Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs during the 2023-24 season.

The official figure of 20,737,276 surpasses the previous season’s record by almost five per cent. An average of 33,885 tickets were sold per match across Germany’s top two divisions.

In the top-tier Bundesliga, 11,925,726 tickets were sold at an average of 38,973 per match. The DFL said the Bundesliga’s average attendance figure places the league ahead of the English Premier League and the Italian Serie A at the top of the European rankings.

The occupancy rate of Bundesliga stadiums was 95.2%, above the 92.6% recorded in 2022-23. A total of 15 out of 18 Bundesliga clubs achieved an occupancy rate of more than 90%.

In the 2. Bundesliga, 8,811,550 tickets were sold during the 2023-24 campaign at an average of 28,796 per game – a record for the competition. The figure marked a 30% rise on the 2022-23 season.

Marc Lenz, DFL managing director, said: “German professional football remains an absolute crowd puller, the influx of people to our clubs is unbroken, regardless of their league affiliation.

“In addition to the attractive and safe football experience in the stadiums, ticket prices are also moderate compared to Europe. For our leagues, these figures are a strong signal that further increases anticipation for the coming season.”

The figures cover the number of tickets sold to fans, as well as honorary and free tickets.

Last month, the English Football League (EFL) claimed the title of the highest-attended league body in Europe after welcoming more than 21.5 million fans in 2023-24, with the figure including an all-time record of more than 12.7 million spectators in the Championship.
