Aston Villa Women has announced that Villa Park will become the team’s main stadium during the 2024-25 season.
Villa Women will play all 11 of its home Women’s Super League (WSL) matches at Villa Park, which is primarily used as the home of the men’s Premier League team. Villa Women’s home cup matches will be played at Bescot Stadium, which previously served as the team’s primary home venue.
The team made the switch to Bescot Stadium, home of League Two club Walsall, in 2020 following its promotion to the WSL. Villa Women played five home matches at Villa Park last season, which saw it finish seventh in the WSL.
Lee Billiard, Villa’s head of women’s football, said: “This is another big step forward and represents a continuation of the progress of our women’s programme at Aston Villa.
“Through the support and hard work of many departments across the football club, we have been able to show Villa Park is a commercially viable venue for us. In the times we have played there, especially over the last couple of seasons, it has always created a special matchday experience for everyone involved.
“Players and staff collectively share an excitement to call Villa Park our primary ground from 2024-25 onwards. Our relationship with Walsall Football Club continues as Poundland Bescot Stadium will be our secondary venue.”
Villa is the latest WSL club to announce a move to a bigger primary home venue for the 2024-25 season.
In May, Liverpool Women agreed a 10-year deal to play its home matches at Totally Wicked Stadium, home of rugby league club St Helens. The club, whose previous primary home ground was Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park, also plans on playing a number of fixtures at Anfield, home of the men’s Premier League team.
It was later announced that Emirates Stadium would become the main home of Arsenal Women next season, hosting 11 matches. The Emirates will host eight WSL matches and three UEFA Women’s Champions League fixtures, should Arsenal qualify for the group stages of the competition.
All of Arsenal Women’s remaining matches next season, including all domestic cup fixtures, will be played at the team’s long-standing home, the Mangata Pay UK Stadium in Borehamwood.
