Indonesia has allocated $180m towards more than 20 football stadium projects in its state budget for 2024.
Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati revealed that the IDR 2.87 trn will be spread among 21 renovation and construction projects at venues across Indonesia. Further funds will also be provided to the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to develop the game in the country.
The biggest funding package is for the under-construction North Sumatra Main Stadium, which will receive around $35m – around a fifth of the total budget. The 25,000-capacity venue is one of those that will host next month’s quadrennial National Sports Week at the $670m multiple-venue North Sumatra sports centre.
The 45,000-capacity Harapan Bangsa Stadium, another major stadium for National Sports Week, will receive around $30m.
Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency will receive around $30m for its rebuilding project following the 2022 disaster that saw 135 killed in a stampede.
“This year the state budget with a budget of IDR 2.874 trn will finance the renovation and construction of 21 stadiums in various locations in Aceh, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, West Java, Banten, Central Java, East Java, DI Yogyakarta, South Sulawesi, South Kalimantan and East Kalimantan,” Sri Mulyani said.
Indonesia is being assisted in its bid to improve stadium standards through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with FIFA in 2023. The agreement was signed during the FIFA U-17 World Cup™ when Indonesia hosted its first FIFA tournament in late 2023.
In May, an expert FIFA delegation visited and evaluated eight stadiums across Indonesia as part of the MOU. FIFA is collaborating with PSSI to improve stadium infrastructure, safety and security standards across Indonesia. These stadiums are being renovated by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.
