The International Olympic Committee has hailed the attendance figures for the recently concluded Olympic Games in Paris, with over 9.5 million tickets sold out of a possible 10 million.

New Olympic attendance records were set in rugby sevens, which attracted over 530,000 fans; handball, which drew nearly 500,000; and beach volleyball, which brought in almost 450,000.

As previously reported, Paris 2024 also set a new attendance record for basketball as more than one million fans turned out across the men’s and women’s tournaments. Lille also set a new record attendance for a women’s basketball game in Europe, with host nation France’s game against Australia watched by 27,193 fans.

A world record for women’s rugby was set as 66,000 fans attended the sevens tournament at the Stade de France, while a record attendance of 26,500 was set for women’s handball. July 30 proved to be a popular day for fan attendance, with around 743,000 spectators attending events across the Games.

According to the IOC, 145,000 fans gathered in the 743 ‘Carrés des Supporters’ zones located in venue stands during the Games, with 2,250 of them gathered along the River Seine for the opening ceremony.

The two road cycling races on August 3 and 4 attracted nearly one million people, while more than six million people attended celebration sites across France. Some 4.5 million fans attended 171 Club 2024 sites, with the three biggest – Paris Hôtel de Ville, Parc Georges-Valbon and Marseille – welcoming 15,000 to 20,000 people per day.

A dedicated ‘Champions Park’ celebration space was set up at the Eiffel Tower and attracted 280,000 people. Across all types of celebration sites, 95% of visitors rated their experience as good or excellent.

Yesterday (Monday), our sister site TheTicketingBusiness.com reported that more than one million tickets remain available for the Paralympics, which take place from August 28 to September 8.

Only 1.3 million of 2.3 million tickets have been sold for the Paralympics, but a boost in sales is expected following the end of the Olympics.
