Audiovisual systems manufacturer Daktronics has installed a new centre-hung scoreboard at Crypto.com Arena ahead of the new basketball and ice hockey seasons.
The 41.7-million-pixel scoreboard features six displays and spans 5,500 square feet. Installation commenced on August 1 with a crew of more than 60 workers, and the project was completed by yesterday’s (Wednesday’s) deadline.
Crypto.com Arena is the home of the NBA’s LA Lakers, NHL’s LA Kings, and WNBA’s LA Sparks. It also hosts music concerts and other events.
The main video display is a continuous canvas wrapping around the centre-hung structure and features 3.9-millimetre pixel spacing. It measures around 27 feet high by 170.5 feet in circumference and facilitates variable content zoning.
A bottom display measuring 18 feet high by 18 feet wide will sit below the main display, bringing additional graphics and animations, as well as the opportunity for additional content during events.
Four underbelly displays are also fitted along each side of the bottom display. A custom Daktronics control system will also tie together the new centre-hung scoreboard with the previously installed end wall and ribbon displays.
The upgraded scoreboard will also include end wall and ribbon displays provided by Daktronics in 2022.
Crypto.com Arena president Lee Zeidman said: “We’re elated to unveil a new, state-of-the-art scoreboard with crisp, clear graphics and imagery for our fans to enjoy at Lakers, Kings and LA Sparks games, as well as other live events inside Crypto.com Arena.
“As the arena celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2024, working with Daktronics to showcase this spectacular centrepiece, which will bring our guests even closer to the action, complements the numerous additional upgrades and technological advances within this historic venue.”
Reece Kurtenbach, president and chief executive of Daktronics, added: “Crypto.com Arena is the premier venue in Los Angeles and we’re excited to deliver an improved experience through the LED technology we’ve installed this year.
“This project reflects our commitment to innovation and quality, while also showing our vision for the future of technology and its role in supporting live events. We’re thrilled to see this installation come to life as it provides another exciting level of fan entertainment.
Up until last season, Crypto.com Arena was also home to the NBA’s LA Clippers. The team will be moving into its new Intuit Dome arena in Inglewood for the start of the 2024-25 season.
Daktronics has also designed and manufactured a huge Halo Board for Intuit Dome, which is said to be the largest ever double-sided halo display in an arena setting. Daktronics signed a wide-ranging deal with the Clippers in June 2022.
