Campeonato Brasileiro Série A football club Botafogo has assumed full operating control of its home stadium, Estádio Nilton Santos, through its Sociedade Anônima do Futebol (SAF) entity.

Control of the stadium has been transferred to the SAF from Clube Social, an entity linked to the club. Clube Social leased the stadium from the City of Rio de Janeiro.

Botafogo said the deal will provide greater legal protection for the club and will increase the possibilities for generating revenue from the stadium. The club assumed control of the stadium following a meeting with Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes.

Botafogo chief executive Thairo Arruda said: “The transfer of the Nilton Santos concession from Clube Social to SAF will greatly enhance and improve our stadium management process.

“Today, with the concession still at the club, we had to deal with bureaucracy every time we wanted to do something new. We will now be much more agile and efficient in conducting operations and making improvements to the stadium.

“It was a great goal for Botafogo fans. Thanks to the city government and the mayor, who granted and authorised this transfer within the terms of the law. It will be incredible what we will be able to do from now on.”

Following his takeover in February 2022, Botafogo is majority-owned by US businessman John Textor. The stadium has undergone modernisation to allow for greater flexibility in the hosting of events, and in the past year it has staged concerts from the likes of Taylor Swift, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Weeknd.

Botafogo has played at the 46,000-capacity stadium since it opened in 2007.
