Plans to expand the Main Stand at Selhurst Park have been approved by Croydon Council and will see the stadium’s total capacity increase from 25,486 to more than 34,000.
Once completed, the glass-fronted Main Stand will hold around 13,500 fans, marking a significant increase from its current capacity of 5,200.
The Main Stand was originally built 100 years ago but the upgrade is hoped to modernise the stadium, which is occupied by Premier League club Crystal Palace.
The renovation is due to achieve high standards of sustainable design, including its aim of hitting net zero carbon targets.
It is due to have three tiers of seating, a new club show, museum, and improved access for supporters with disabilities.
“We are delighted that the stadium plans for Croydon’s premier league football club have the go-ahead and this exciting project can move forward,” said executive mayor of Croydon Jason Perry.
“This is the outcome of continued work behind the scenes by the Council and Crystal Palace FC on getting the plans right for the football fans and the area and supporting the residents of Wooderson Close.
“The new stand represents a significant investment in Croydon and I look forward to seeing the transformation of the stadium for residents to enjoy.”
As part of the stadium expansion, Crystal Palace has committed to the future regeneration of the London area.
The club has signed a legal agreement to provide replacement homes and provisions to make sure that the development does not impact affordable housing in the area.
Last month, Australian construction and real estate company Lendlease was appointed to carry out the upgrade work.
