Organisers of the Riyadh Season Card — Wembley Edition are targeting a record attendance for a boxing event held at Wembley Stadium after permission was granted to increase capacity by 6,000.
The event on September 21 is set to be headlined by the world title heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois. Promoters announced last week that all general admission tickets had been sold at a 90,000 capacity, with only platinum and hospitality options remaining.
Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA), has now confirmed that the organisation’s request for a record boxing crowd at Wembley has been approved. The new capacity will be 96,000 with additional tickets to be made available for sale at midday (GMT) today (Friday).
Next month’s event will be the first Riyadh Season boxing card held in London, with a 96,000 crowd reportedly having the potential to set a new record for the sport in the UK and post-war Europe. The April 2021 fight between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte is Wembley’s current record holder with a 94,000 attendance.
In total six all-British bouts feature on the Riyadh Season Card — Wembley Edition card, with added interest being provided through a performance by Liam Gallagher. The gig by the Oasis frontman was confirmed before Tuesday’s announcement of a reunion tour of the UK and Ireland next year, some 16 years after the band split.
Wembley is currently due to host five Oasis concerts as part of this tour, on July 25, 26 and 30, as well as August 2-3.
