Super League club Hull Kingston Rovers has announced plans to open a 1,000-capacity temporary stand for its upcoming match against Leeds Rhinos, as well as its home play-off tie, as interest in the team grows on the back of a strong season.

The stand will be located at the south end of Sewell Group Craven Park. Rovers has taken the decision due to “unprecedented” demand for tickets, with the club currently sitting top of the league as the season draws to a close.

Tickets will be reserved seating and will be sold on a ‘best buy’ basis, meaning that supporters will not be able to choose their specific seat.

Rovers had previously announced that the Leeds game was a sell-out, and earlier today (Thursday) the club revealed that less than 50% of the additional 1,000 seats were available.

Table-topping Rovers travel to second-place Wigan Warriors tomorrow, with both teams sitting on 38 points. Rovers will travel to Leigh Leopards on September 13 before closing the season at home against Leeds on September 20.

If Rovers win all three fixtures, the team will claim the League Leaders’ Shield, which would mark its first major trophy in 40 years.

If Rovers finish the season as league leaders, they will be guaranteed a home play-off semi-final against the lowest-ranked winner from the eliminator stage, which is contested by teams who finish between third and sixth. If the club finishes second, it will play the highest-ranked winner from the eliminator stage.

Rovers could still finish third, which would see them enter the play-offs at the eliminator stage, where they would face the team that finishes sixth in the regular season.

Rovers’ average attendance this season has been around 10,000.

The Super League grand final will take place at Old Trafford, home of Premier League football club Manchester United, on October 12.
