Italian Serie A football club Como 1907 has been given the green light to return to its Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia following upgrade works to bring it up to top division standards.
Como has this season returned to Serie A for the first time in 21 years having secured promotion from Serie B in 2023-24. Following confirmation of promotion back in May, work has been taking place to expand and enhance the Sinigaglia, the club’s home since it opened in 1927.
Situated on the shores of Lake Como, the Sinigaglia provides for one of the most picturesque settings in world football, but substantial work has been required to make it ready for Serie A football. This has included an increase in its capacity from 7,498 to 10,584 seats.
Due to the work taking place, Como has played all three of its opening Serie A fixtures away from home. However, following a safety inspection from local authorities, the Sinigaglia has been given the green light to stage Como’s league fixture against Bologna on September 14.
The news avoids the threat of Como potentially having to utilise Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, home to fellow Serie A club Hellas Verona.
Corrado Conforto Galli, Prefect of Como, said, according to Il Giorno: “I would like to thank all the members of the Provincial Supervisory Commission, the Municipality of Como and Como 1907 for their commitment and willingness shown in the various meetings that have taken place in recent months and culminated with the final inspection. This is a typical example of synergy in the public interest.”
