Organisers have revealed that a record 12 million tickets were sold across the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, as the latter event concluded yesterday (Sunday) with a closing ceremony at the Stade de France.
Over 2.5 million tickets were sold for the Paralympics, which commenced on August 28. Ahead of the start of the Paralympics, organisers revealed that some 500,000 tickets were still up for grabs, and the majority of these were snapped up over the course of the event.
More than 9.5 million tickets were sold for the Olympics, which ran from July 26 to August 11. Olympic records were set in several sports, including rugby sevens, handball, beach volleyball and basketball.
The total of 12 million tickets sold across the Olympics and Paralympics marks a new record and surpasses the 10.9 million that were purchased by spectators for London 2012. Paris did not set a record for Paralympic ticket sales, however, with London retaining this title after selling 2.7 million.
The Paris 2024 organising committee said that over one million people attended its ‘Clubs 2024’ and ‘Club France’ zones during the Paralympics. International Paralympic Committee (IPC) president Andrew Parsons said the Paris Games will be the “new benchmark” for the event.
The Olympic and Paralympic Games will head to Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032.
