Elected officials in the Île-de-France region have voted in favour of reserving a package of land that could potentially house a new stadium for French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain.
The site spans around 50 hectares and forms part of a wider Environmental Master Plan being carried out by the region. The exact location of the site has not yet been specified, but Montigny-le-Bretonneux and Aulnay-souse-Bois have expressed an interest in housing the stadium.
Regional authorities in Île-de-France, led by Valérie Pécresse, voted on the matter yesterday (Wednesday). It emerged in February that Pécresse, President of the Regional Council of Île-de-France, was canvassing leaders of towns within the region to see whether they could accommodate a new stadium for PSG.
Paris is located in the Île-de-France region. Pécresse believes the region can “open up all possibilities for a stadium outside of Paris” and she has been contacted by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to assess other sites outside of the capital.
PSG currently plays at the Parc des Princes (pictured), but in February Al-Khelaifi stated that the club would seek to leave the stadium following the City of Paris’ definitive declaration that it was not for sale.
On February 6, the City of Paris, which owns the Parc des Princes, sought to end the prospect of PSG acquiring the stadium as Mayor Anne Hidalgo said that the subject was “closed”.
PSG has been hoping that the stadium would be made available for sale so the club can buy it and carry out what it regards as essential redevelopment work. Relations between the city and the club have been at a standstill for some time.
PSG’s 30-year lease deal for the Parc des Princes expires at the end of 2043. The stadium has a capacity of around 48,000 and the club wants to increase this to 60,000.
Back in January, PSG opted against submitting a bid to buy the Stade de France in favour of renovating the Parc des Princes or building a new stadium. Quoted in the French media recently, Hidalgo reiterated that “the Parc is not for sale”.
