Italian Serie A club Atalanta played its first match at the renovated Gewiss Stadium yesterday (Sunday) as it recorded a 3-2 win over Fiorentina.

The multi-year project included the reconstruction of the Curva Sud Morosini, the away fans sector and the Distinti Sud, as well as the redevelopment of the Pisani and Rinascimento stands.

The stadium’s capacity has increased to 24,000 following the completion of the project, which also includes a new square outside of the ground, an underground car park and wider urbanisation work.

The final phase of the redevelopment work was carried out in the summer of 2023, which meant that Gewiss Stadium’s capacity was reduced by around 3,500 last season. Atalanta was forced to play the first three matches of the 2024-25 season away from home but the club returned to Gewiss Stadium yesterday.

All the goals in the 3-2 win over Fiorentina came in the first half, with Atalanta twice coming from behind to secure the three points. Atalanta has qualified for the UEFA Champions League after winning last season’s Europa League, and it will welcome Arsenal to Gewiss Stadium on Thursday.

Atalanta chief executive Luca Percassi said: “For our family and the entire club it will be a great emotion and a great source of pride to play in the Champions League in our completely renovated home. For us it is a masterpiece, a project that is full of meaning for the entire territory and for the city. There is a lot of work behind it, but the result is extraordinary.”

Ahead of yesterday’s match, Atalanta announced that fans will be able to travel to Gewiss Stadium for free this season using ATB-TEB transport.
