German 2. Bundesliga club SC Preussen Münster has announced plans for a major revamp of its home stadium, with construction company Hellmich Group appointed to carry out the project.

The project will see the capacity of the current Preuẞenstadion expanded from 14,300 to 19,000. The stadium’s north, west and east stands will be reimagined as part of plans to convert the venue into a “pure football stadium”.

The east stand will have no openings and feature an innovative access point from below the pitch level. It will seat more than 8,700 home fans. In the west stand, the first construction phase will see the introduction of a grandstand for away fans with almost 870 seats and around 1,140 standing spaces.

The stadium will feature 190 wheelchair spaces and additional seats for accompanying fans. According to the club, the new-look Preuẞenstadion will be the first stadium of its size in Germany to meet the legally prescribed 1% mark for wheelchair spaces.

The north stand will feature a new hospitality area with a stadium terrace. A total of 18 new individual boxes and one larger event box will also be created.

The stadium will also feature an integrated day-care centre, an office space for Preussen Münster and photovoltaic systems on the roof. It will also offer 7,000 bicycle parking spaces and around 900 car parking spaces, with the club encouraging climate-friendly travel to matches.

The project will begin with the construction of the new west stand in February 2025. The completion of outdoor facilities and access routes is due to be finished by February 2028.

The north stand, northwest and northeast corners are due to be finished in the fourth quarter of 2027. It is hoped the east stand will be finished in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Markus Sass, managing director for stadium, finance and organisation at Preussen Münster, said: “The design is both spectacular and highly functional. It already visually conveys the full impact that SC Preussen will develop with the new stadium. The access to the east stand from below the pitch level without a mouth hole is a special highlight for me and a real atmospheric unique selling point in the German stadium landscape.

“The wishes of our fans have been taken into account to a special degree here. This will be acoustically and visually unique. Because the stadium entrances are integrated into the facade and there is therefore no large fenced-in external security area, the new stadium is embedded quite naturally in the Berg Fidel sports park and will be very present and tangible even on non-match days. In addition, the design also offers a weather-protected inner circulation area for maximum opportunities for spectators to meet each other.”

Mayor of Münster Markus Lewe added: “With the completion of the tendering process, it is now clear: the expansion of our stadium is coming – and it’s very concrete. After years of intensive preparation and planning, we have now reached the ‘point of no return’.

“A good 100 years after the opening of the stadium on Hammer Strasse, the SCP will have a completely renovated, modern home that, as in the past, will stand for countless more football matches and emotional moments.”
