Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has said the Brazilian football club will host several matches and other activities at the Mercado Livre Arena Pacaembu after renovation work is completed at the stadium.
The Campeonato Brasileiro Série B club already played occasional games at the stadium before redevelopment work commenced three years ago. The three other big clubs in the State of São Paulo – Palmeiras, Corinthians and São Paulo – also played at the stadium.
In February, Allegra Pacaembu, the operator of the Estádio do Pacaembu, furthered its ambition of making the revamped stadium a true multi-purpose venue by agreeing deals with the four clubs and Four Even, a Brazilian investment fund which specialises in the promotion of concerts and entertainment events.
Allegra Pacaembu assumed management of the stadium complex in January 2020 after being awarded a 35-year contract. Work on the redevelopment started in June 2021 and it is now nearing its completion.
Santos’ main home stadium is the Estádio Urbano Caldeira, which is also known as Vila Belmiro. Last month, the club agreed a deal for Viva Sorte, which markets capitalisation bonds, to take on naming rights to the stadium.
The stadium will be known as Vila Viva Sorte until construction work begins on a new stadium for Santos. In September 2023, Santos signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the new stadium with WTorre.
With work on Arena Belmiro set to commence in the coming months, the Estádio do Pacaembu will step in to host Santos matches. Santos has agreed a 10-year deal to host matches at the latter venue.
Last Friday, Santos held an event at the Estádio do Pacaembu to present its third kit for the 2024 season, and Teixeira (pictured) has expressed a commitment to making the stadium a second home for the club while its current stadium is being redeveloped.
Teixeira said: “Based on this activity and in accordance with the existing contract with Allegra Pacaembu, we scheduled the first event that took place today. And now we are planting our flag here, as the Santos stadium in the capital of São Paulo. We will not only host games, but we will also carry out other activities that will be scheduled.”
