Portuguese Primeira Liga club Sporting CP has detailed plans for a major overhaul of the Estádio José Alvalade and announced short-term enhancements to the matchday experience at the stadium.

Sporting has presented ‘Future is Coming’, a 10-year strategic plan for the club. André Bernardo, the club’s vice-president, has said that Sporting will launch a tender over the next 10 years for a remodelling of the stadium.

Bernardo said that the new-look stadium will be an “international reference” and drive the club’s plans to double its revenue over the course of the 10-year strategic plan. The stadium would be divided into five zones – emerald, diamond, platinum, gold and silver – to provide a simplified experience for fans when buying tickets.

Sporting has also signalled its intention to acquire Alvaláxia, a commercial space next to the Estádio Jose Alvalade that the club sold in 2007. The space would serve as an entertainment hub for Sporting and allow the club to generate more revenue on match days and non-match days. It would also house a new club museum.

In the short term, Sporting plans on closing the ‘moat’ area between the stands and the pitch at the Estádio Jose Alvalade before the start of the 2025-26 season. This will enable the club to fit 2,000 more seats.

Sporting has also announced plans to “reinvent” the matchday experience with several new premium seating options. ‘VIP Lion Seats’ will provide access to exclusive lounges and an up-close view of players as they enter the pitch.

On the second and third floor of the stadium, Sporting will offer loges and executive seats, which will include access to parking, fast-track entrance, exclusive lounges, gourmet catering and more.

During the 2023-24 season, the Estádio José Alvalade underwent a range of upgrades, including a new Wi-Fi system, new turnstiles and new NFC technology. The stadium has a capacity of around 50,000 and opened in 2003 ahead of the UEFA European Championship in Portugal the following year.
