Four-time NBA All-Star, Karl-Anthony Towns, has partnered with the GO Ministries and World Youth Clubs (WYC) charitable organisations to develop a new basketball arena in the Dominican Republic.
The facility will be located in the city of Santiago and will be a full-sized indoor basketball arena equipped with the latest sports technology. Additionally, the facility will provide access to a state-of-the-art training room and classroom, and a community meeting space to host workshops and events that support holistic youth development.
The design and construction of the facility is being undertaken by JMF Arquitectos, whose vision aims to emphasise modern aesthetics and functionality, while blending seamlessly with the local environment and providing a world-class training environment.
Towns, who was today (Wednesday) traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks, has a strong connection to the Dominican Republic through his late mother, Jacqueline, who was born there and died in April 2020 following complications relating to COVID-19.
In tribute to his mother, Towns has also chosen to compete for the Dominican Republic at an international level. He said: “I am excited to partner with GO Ministries/WYC to create a facility where kids can play basketball and provide a platform to learn life skills, build character, and pursue their dreams. The Dominican Republic has given me so much, and this is my way of giving back.”
Towns, a global ambassador of WYC since 2022, is said to have made a “substantial financial commitment” to the venture, but in order for it to come to fruition, is calling on support from individuals, corporations, and organisations. Contributions will be used to fund construction, purchase equipment, and support ongoing programs at the facility.
“We are so excited to partner with Karl on this groundbreaking project,” said Will Partin, president of GO Ministries. “Karl’s involvement will open doors for youth who might otherwise miss such opportunities, fostering a new generation of leaders and champions in the Dominican Republic.”
Groundbreaking in Santiago is due to take place next year, with completion expected in 2026.
