The National Football League (NFL) has awarded Super Bowl LXII to Atlanta in 2028, with the game to be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons and MLS team Atlanta United.
The announcement was made at the NFL Fall League Meeting in Atlanta yesterday (Tuesday) following a review of the proposal by the League’s Fan Engagement & Major Events Committee and a vote by full ownership.
Super Bowl LXII will mark the fourth time Atlanta has hosted the NFL’s showpiece end-of-season fixture and the second time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with the most recent game hosted in 2019 when the New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams 13-3. The first two Super Bowls to take place in Atlanta were at the now-demolished Georgia Dome in 1994 and 2000.
“Renowned for its hospitality and rich sports and entertainment culture, Atlanta is a world-class event destination and a natural fit for Super Bowl 62,” said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
“Arthur Blank (Falcons owner and chairman) has been a transformative figure in the Atlanta community, playing a crucial role in leading the bid to bring the Super Bowl back to the city. I have been fortunate to witness firsthand how Arthur continues to drive community engagement and economic development in the Atlanta community through his unwavering commitment to sports and philanthropy.
“We look forward to working with him, the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Sports Council and all of our partners on the ground to create an unforgettable experience for fans around the world in 2028.”
As part of the lead-up to Super Bowl LXII, Atlanta will host events including NFL Honors, Super Bowl Experience, Super Bowl Opening Night and an expansive community program. On Location, the official hospitality partner of the NFL, yesterday launched its Priority Access deposit program for Super Bowl LXII hospitality packages, offering fans the first opportunity to guarantee seats to the game.
This season’s Super Bowl is scheduled to take place on February 9 at Caesars Superdome. The New Orleans Saints in August unveiled the final elements of the stadium’s $560m (£431m/€514.7m) transformation, which has been timed to culminate with the staging of the Super Bowl.
In December, SoFi Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, was awarded hosting rights to the 2027 Super Bowl. The 2024 event took place at the Las Vegas Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium, with Super Bowl LX heading to the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium.
Blank said yesterday: “Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world’s largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honoured to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl LIII in 2019. I look forward to working alongside our city and state officials as we continue to elevate Georgia as a premier, global sports destination.”
