Finnish construction company SRV has been awarded a contract to build a new multi-purpose venue in Hyvinkää.

The total estimated cost of the project is €45.6m (£38m/$49.3m), of which SRV’s share will be €32m to €40m. The project is being carried out as a joint procurement contract between the City of Hyvinkää and Laurea University of Applied Sciences, which is located in Finland’s Uusimaa region.

Construction is expected to commence in the spring of 2025. The arena will be capable of hosting sports and other events and will also host a new campus for the Laurea University of Applied Sciences.

The arena site, which will span around 13,000 square metres, will also include restaurants and other facilities. It is hoped the project will be completed by the end of 2026.

Hyvinkää is located in the Uusimaa region, around 30 miles north of Helsinki, Finland’s capital. The primary purpose of the new arena will be to serve as a professional sport and event space that can also be used by schools and local sports teams, and for casual sport.

Kimmo Hyry, head of SRV’s construction unit in the capital region, said: “We are excited to launch Hyvinkää Areena. We believe that the two-phase cooperative project management contract model chosen for the project is perfectly suited for a project like this, with several different user groups and space needs.

“In recent years, we have implemented several different multi-purpose halls, including versatile ones for use by various sports, such as Matinkylä high school’s sports hall and the Kotka Port Arena, which can also be used for sports events if necessary. Tampere’s multi-purpose arena, Nokia Arena, also serves as a stage for international-level events. Currently, SRV is also developing an arena project in the new district of Turku Ratapiha.”

Antti Nikkanen, property manager for Hyvinkää, added: “The arena project is an important vitality and urban development project that, when realised, will significantly increase the attractiveness of the city centre and the whole of Hyvinkää as the northern centre of the metropolitan area.

“The project has strategic significance for Hyvinkää as a whole. The arena has been in preparation for years and now we are happy when we move together with SRV and Laurea University of Applied Sciences to develop and implement the whole of the arena, which includes sports, event and college campus facilities of the future.”
