Tech Stack: Shift4, Chase Center and more

Shift4, a provider of integrated payments and commerce technology, has been selected by Monumental Sports & Entertainment to handle payment processing for Capital One Arena, home of the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals.

The multi-year partnership will see Shift4 deliver an end-to-end solution to connect all revenue centres across Capital One Arena. As part of the deal, the company’s payment processing technology will be used to modernise the arena’s transaction experience.

Shift4 will also process payments for ticket sales at the venue, including Wizards and Capitals games. Capital One Arena is set for major redevelopment work in the coming years, and earlier this week MSE released the first renderings showing how the revamped facility might look.

Elsewhere in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors have entered into a partnership with Coinbase, an online platform for buying, transferring and storing cryptocurrency.

Coinbase will serve as the official cryptocurrency platform and blockchain partner of the Warriors and Chase Center (pictured). Fans in attendance during home games against the Memphis Grizzlies on January 4 and the Milwaukee Bucks on March 20 will have the chance to receive physical and onchain giveaways celebrating the Warriors, courtesy of Coinbase.

Fellow NBA team the Portland Trail Blazers has announced the rollout of Intuitive AI’s Oscar Sort, an AI recycling assistant, throughout Moda Center concourses.

The technology will help divert waste from landfills by guiding fans to make correct sorting decisions. Oscar Sort instantly recognises compostable, recyclable and reusable items, guiding fans to dispose of them correctly.

French Ligue 1 football club Paris Saint-Germain has announced a deal with blockchain platform Matchain.

The deal names Matchain as PSG’s exclusive digital identity partner and will run until 2027. Matchain will integrate its decentralised identity and data sovereignty solutions to enhance fan engagement and user data security for PSG.

Rogers Centre in Toronto has completed an upgrade to its 5G network as the stadium prepares to host six shows on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

The C$8m (£4.5m/€5.4m/$5.8m) upgrade will provide faster speeds, lower latency and more capacity during the concerts as large numbers of fans livestream and share their experience online. The stadium will have three times more 5G network capacity for the shows than it had previously.

UBS Arena and the New York Islanders have announced a partnership with workplace products manufacturer Xerox.

Xerox will serve as the official office equipment and service supplier for the arena and the NHL team, providing printers and robotic process automation. Xerox will also work with arena operator Oak View Group to support sustainability and diversity programmes.

Austrian Bundesliga club SK Rapid Wien has announced plans to introduce a new LED floodlight system at Allianz Stadion in 2025.

The move is designed to reduce the club’s CO2 emissions and save on electricity costs.

The Melbourne Stars Big Bash League cricket team has partnered with KOJO to enhance its matchday presentation and fan engagement.

The Stars will host five matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and four at the CitiPower Centre across the upcoming men’s and women’s seasons. KOJO specialises in sports presentation and in-stadium activations.
