The City of Malmö has entered into a partnership with Swedish construction company Skanska to transform the Malmö Stadion site into a modern facility for athletics and football.

First opened in 1958 as a venue for Sweden’s hosting of that year’s FIFA World Cup, Malmö Stadion has been earmarked for demolition for nearly a decade, but still sits adjacent to Eleda Stadion, which opened in 2009 as the new home of Allsvenskan football club Malmö FF.

Skanska has signed a collaboration agreement with the City to develop and build Malmö’s new athletics and football stadium. The new stadium will replace the current Malmö Stadion and will be built next to the new multi-sport building that Skanska, on behalf of the City, is currently preparing for.

Skanska’s assignment also includes conducting an architectural competition to select the company which will design the new stadium. In the near future, the initial planning will begin and a program for the architectural competition will be designed. The architectural competition will be conducted in early 2025 and will be followed by a design phase.

The new stadium will be built where Malmö Stadion is today, but will have the same orientation as Eleda Stadion. The agreement that has now been concluded includes planning, demolition and calculations for the construction work.

A separate agreement for the construction phase itself will be concluded at a later date. Demolition work on the existing stadium will begin in 2025, with construction of the new stadium scheduled to begin in 2026.

The new athletics and football stadium will be developed for international competitions in both sports, and is planned to have a capacity of up to 8,000 spectators.

Pär Helm, district manager of Skanska Sweden, said: “It is an honour that we have been entrusted to develop and build the new athletics and football stadium in collaboration with the City of Malmö, which together with the new multisport building are central parts in the development of the stadium area.

“We look forward to working together to create the conditions for the realisation of many athletics and football dreams.”

Thomas Sterner, head of department at the City’s leisure administration, added: “When we now build a new Malmö stadium, we are creating a home ground for the daily operation of sports and for a wide range of matches and events. Here, Malmö athletes can continue to realise their dreams.”
